There are two major types of hard drives: Parallel ATA (IDE) style (ATA or PATA) and the newer Serial ATA (SATA) style. The two types are not interchangeable. The pictures below show the difference between the two drive types. Some laptop hard drives have a connector bar or tray covering the 44 pins or 2 connector strips, which may not look like either picture shown. You need to remove the connector bar to fully identify your hard drive type.

Hard drive types can also be identified by the hard drive model number through your operating system device manager. If you email us the hard drive model, for instance HTS541680J9AT00, we can identify the hard drive type your laptop needs. If you do not know how to do this email us for the instructions.
